Klankstollingen

Short documentary, 2006, 50 min.

Stern and introverted. This is the image that an old portrait of composer Jakob van Domselaer (1890-1960) evokes. In the biographical documentary Klankstollingen, music connoisseurs and family friends complete the picture. Born in Nijkerk and trained at the Utrecht conservatory, Van Domselaer visited Berlin, London and Paris in the 1910s, before settling, first in Laren, and later permanently in Bergen. Close friends with painter Piet Mondriaan and a prominent member of the artists society De nieuwe kring (The New Circle), he belonged to the progressive art circles of the day.
Pianist Kees Wieringa is the leading authority on the subject and the regular interpreter of Van Domselaer's hermetical and rarely performed works. 'It is music that makes no concessions', he sums up his admiration. Archive footage is combined with interviews and registrations of performances in a strict, sober style that does the brilliant composer justice.
