Barry Hay, Kissing a Dream

Short documentary, 2011, 53 min.

Barry Hay, the singer of Golden Earring, was born in India as the son of a Dutch mother and an English father. After his parents? divorce, Barry and his mother left for the Netherlands. She severed all contact with his father, Colonel Philip A. Hay. Barry?s sixtieth birthday is a turning point. When his daughter Bella turns eighteen, he returns to India for the first time with her, looking for his past.
In her directing debut, filmmaker Hadassah de Boer mixes Barry Hay?s quest in India with footage of his life on Curacao. Here, he prepares himself for an important concert: the presentation of The Big Band Theory, the solo album he dedicated to his father. We see him on his sixtieth birthday, in the gym and with his daughter, strolling through New Delhi. This turns rock star Hay into a man of flesh and blood, a committed father who adores his daughters and a son in search of his own father.
