Movie With a Cameraman

Short documentary, 2004, 50 min.

Filmmaker Wilko Bello pointed his camera to the street, or to be more precise: to the view from his window. This view had been created when the Parks and Gardens Department removed a tall tree that had been uprooted by a devastating storm. Using this unexpectedly emerging view, Bello captures filmmakers and photographers that regularly stand still on the bridge in front of his window to immortalise the famous Westertoren in Amsterdam. Bello also spots demonstrations, a concert, a parade, a cyclist, official cars, marital quarrels, nocturnal gadabouts, birds and Minoes. And of course he also follows the growth of the new sapling. Filming always from the same spot behind his window, Bello intentionally left the window frame and camera corrections in the film, and simultaneously shows two moments in time in split screen. The title of the film is a reference to Dziga Vertov's Man With a Movie Camera from 1929.
