Job en de Hollandse vrijstaat

Short documentary, 2009, 47 min.

In the late eighties, Rosemarie Blank shot some images in the no man's land of deserted factories in Amsterdam-Oost for her film Transit Levantkade. From this footage, she compiled the film Job en de Hollandse vrijstaat in 2009, a collection of memories of the colourful group of artists who lived and worked in the Conradstraat. The film presents an interesting portrait of life in this squatters' bastion in the eighties, including the self-built living quarters in the large halls, the delivery bicycles and old cars, the small fires and the dogs. One of the occupants was the peculiar man called Job. After the evacuation of the complex, he survived under the direst of conditions. He seemingly lived unaware of time or place, but he seemed to see something in stones and wood chips that other people did not see.
