Intolerance

Lang Televisie Drama, 1995, 72 min.

TV film based on two short modern operas, entirely sung. The opera Weisse Rose by Udo Zimmerman forms the dramatic starting point for the film. This opera is about the execution of two student who distributed pamphlets in 1943 calling on people to resist the Nazi regime. Using archive footage, they gradually become a symbol in the film for all political prisoners through the ages. Litany of our Time by Ton Leeuw is set at an airport, where a man is waiting for his flight. In this impersonal and streamlined world, he is struck by newspaper reports about wars, natural disasters, starvation and violence. The news screams at him, but scarcely gets through. An enormous feeling of alienation comes over him.
