Het Holland van Jan Blokker

Documentary, 2010, 85 min.

In the last two years of his life, Jan Blokker was regularly visited by Maarten Schmidt and Thomas Doebele. The journalist, writer, scriptwriter, columnist and TV maker left a distinct mark on the media landscape of the last century. He talks about the changing Netherlands, drawing parallels with his personal life. The set-up is simple: an avid speaker, his study (with two Golden Calves in the background) and a lot of historic footage. Although the body visibly deteriorates and the gasping Blokker is administered the occasional extra dose of oxygen, the spirit is unabated. From the depression and war years, via the reconstruction of the country and simultaneous disintegration of the socio-political division, to the current settlement with the political left; Blokker puts these issues in perspective, and spices them with personal anecdotes.
