Veldhospitaal Uruzgan
Documentary, 2009, 100 min.
In Camp Holland in the Afghan province of Uruzgan, wounded people are admitted to the field hospital in base camp. The diptych Veldhospitaal Uruzgan follows the Dutch medical staff in Camp Holland that gives acute medical aid to soldiers and the local population. Surgeon Rob Leemans and his team are ready 24 hours a day to operate on victims of war violence and roadside bombs. For the medical staff, working in a war zone entails making choices all the time. They would prefer to help everybody, but they can't. An Afghan man in need of a foot amputation is turned away at the gate. But a seriously undernourished child is admitted.
Camp Holland prepares for a large-scale military action. Dutch, Australian and Afghan fighting units plan to clear an area north of Camp Holland of Taliban fighters. The field hospital is quickly vacated and the patients are transported to a hospital in Kandahar. The beds have to be available for possible military victims.
