Documentary follows several young people in China in subsequent years and shows the possibilities of young people before and after the student protests which were put down bloodily in 1989. Nineteen-year-old He Yong is singer/guitarist in Mayday, one of the few Chinese rock bands. His girlfriend Yu Li is a 21-year-old student. On 25 May 1989 Mayday played on Tiananmen Square. Ten days later the protests ended in a bloodbath. One year later, the director returns to Beijing. He Yong has been in hiding for months because he is wanted by the authorities. Yu has graduated and is trying hard to get a job. She wants to leave China as soon as possible. By 1992 He Yong and Yu Li are leading very different lives. The rebellious rock singer is now disillusioned and yearns for a normal life. Yu Li has a job and wants to marry her foreign boyfriend.
