Pan

Short documentary, 1961, 23 min.

Rowing and swimming, a boy explores a watery area inhabited by all sorts of brooding birds. While playing his panpipe, he looks around enquiringly. Until he is attacked by a big mute swan that is only soothed by the boy's placid panpipe play. The film ends with a slow courtship display by two adult swans, moving to the panpipe notes and the boy who leaves the area in his rowboat. The film clinched an award at the 1962 Cannes festival and was nominated for an Oscar in 1963.
