De geestelijke verovering van de wereld

Documentary, 2001, 70 min.

Filmmaker Jan Willem van Dam conceives a plan to ask his former teacher of Dutch G. C. M. Pijnenborg what he was like as a secondary school student. But the teacher, mainly recognising his former students by their handwriting or voice, does not remember his one-time pupil. Therefore, the filmmaker decides to step back and make the teacher his main subject. The latter consents, because he 'just has a weak spot for ex-pupils'. The camera follows the teacher in his activities, having breakfast in his room, in the refectory of the Jesuit college where he lives, or having a conversation on a bench outside. In this way, incorporating images of landscapes and some staged scenes, the film evokes an image of 'the spiritual conquest of the world'.
