Cape Town Soup

Short documentary, 2010, 47 min.

Personal outpourings, modern dance, drums and free jazz sounds merge in this experimental portrait of Cape Town and five of its inhabitants. It deals not only with everyday life in colourful South Africa, but also with the importance of style and fashion, with losing oneself, speaking the right language and escaping the grind of work and love. The interviewees (four black women and a white man) are calmly sitting on a roof, on a fridge, under a hair drier or with a cup of coffee on a cliff. The dancers, too, contribute to the unusual and often witty composition, giving the city the allure of a contemporary stage scene. Cape Town Soup stays far from the stock formulas of the problem film.
The three female filmmakers stayed in Cape Town for two months, working with local artists. The internationally renowned dancer Mamela Nyamza and the writer and dancer John Cartwright (also one of the interviewees) contributed to the choreography.
