Salaam Bombay!
Nair's first feature deals with a boy growing up on the streets of Bombay (Mumbai) amidst other vagrant children. As a tea boy, he tries to scrape together the 500 rupees required to return to his native village. His attempts to escape his hopeless existence are constantly thwarted as he comes into contact with the violent world of prostitution and drugs. This realistic film was shot on location, largely with amateur actors, and won various international awards.
