The stories in this triptych are not based on narrative conventions. The structure is associative and the atmosphere playful, as in a dream, where anything is possible. Does the shadow of a shrieking seagull steer the girl to a boy or to her freedom? Is a grass-stalk longer than a stone's throw, or the flight of an aeroplane? How far, then, is someone who is in your thoughts? Is a caper pain, ecstasy, a climax or a vanishing? The acts in Lessons in Lightness end in a magical event in which characters and surroundings are united for a single moment.
