Mojave Short documentary , 2004, 50 min.

A life in barrenness. This is an apt description of the reality in the Mojave Desert in the southwest of the United States. Nothing blocks the horizon; the skies are endless, as is the landscape, which stretches out hot and arid in daytime. The wind has free play, cattle has free rein and people that still live here seek refuge in an upgraded caravan. What brings people to want to live in these surroundings? Director Chris Teerink asked a number of inhabitants about their motives. The weather-beaten men are cowboys who could have walked right out of some Western. One of them tells how his first wife died a few years into their marriage. `My second wife did endure it', the man proceeds. `But she had grown up in Texas among cattle.' The film contains some gorgeous images of a shimmering desert. At night, the lights of a modern city in the distance twinkle, but the cowboys prefer to live in an environment where you can't go out unprepared without being punished for it.
