Windmills, together with clogs and tulips, are stereotypical Dutch icons. And not without reason. Windmills helped win the battle against the water, produced our ‘daily bread’ and also functioned as a typeof newspaper. By observing the angle of the blades one could tell if there was good news (a birth) or bad news (a death). The Netherlands has a total of 1048 windmills and 108 watermills. The largest - not the tallest! - is located on the banks of the Overwaard in Kinderdijk, part of the famous windmill park in South-Holland, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The blades of this mill span29.56 metres!
