Tasteful shopping gallery without the ubiquitous chain stores. The traffic-free shopping centre and national monument De Passage, ‘founded’ in 1885, is the oldest (and oncemost up-market) shopping mall in the Netherlands. The architects H. Wesstra and J. C. van Wijk added elegance to it by applying neo-Renaissance and expressionist elements. The Passage complex comprises three arms that join a rotaryintersection with an ornate glass dome. In 2007 De Passage was extensively renovated without affecting its authentic appeal. The marble floors were renovated by Italian experts, therefore persuading high-quality establishments such as fountain-pen-specialist Akkerman to stay.
Fact: De Passage received a prestigious award from the Dutch Council of Shopping Centres (NRW) in 2008.
